Curriculum Intent

The National Curriculum consists of the three core subjects English, Mathematics and Science, together with the foundation subjects: History, Geography, Design Technology, Computing, Music, Art, Physical Education, Personal & Social Health Education (PSHE), Religious Education and Modern Foreign Languages (for Key Stage 2).

At Joseph’s we offer an engaging, exciting and stimulating curriculum that is relevant and dynamic. We make use of our fantastic location and proximity to central London to broaden the educational experiences of the children. Our curriculum is based around our key stage topics and involves projects, meaningful tasks and experiential visits. Our aim is for all children to become confident, creative and engaged learners who achieve their full God-given potential.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to:

  • Engage and excite the children.
  • Develop active learning.
  • Encourage independent learning.
  • Provide a context for learning through first hand experiences.
  • Allow children to make links.
  • Involve parents and carers.
  • Enable children to develop skills for the future.
  • Extend children’s understanding and relationships with their community and beyond.

We are first and foremost a Catholic school and as such are led by the values and beliefs of the Church. Our curriculum provides thorough coverage of the skills, concepts and knowledge set out in the 2014 National Curriculum programmes of study (Years 1 to 6) and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (Nursery and Reception).

The curriculum at St Joseph’s is enriched in the following ways:

  • We are a Forest School and every half term each class visits Paddington Recreation Ground to participate in outdoor learning.
  • Each class has a visitor or an outing every term.
  • Every child will take part in a performance at least once a year.
  • Children are encouraged to debate and discuss current affairs and each child in key stage two has allocated time with an enrichment teacher.
  • We have themed weeks each half term, beginning with a Poetry week in September.
  • Our full time sports coach and the children take part in many local and regional competitions.
  • Our specialist music teacher works with all the classes and also runs an orchestra and school choir.
  • Extra-curricular clubs are varied and meet a variety of children’s needs and interests including fencing, drama, cooking, art, Lego, Irish dance and football.

The curriculum for each Year Group can be found on the relevant Year Group pages.
