Head's Newsletter

I would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Husain for returning to St. Joseph’s this week because her wealth of knowledge, support and experience were invaluable during our Ofsted Inspection on Tuesday 19th. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our staff as well as our governors, parents and pupils who really demonstrated their pride in and love for their learning, their teachers and their school. We will receive formal notification before Easter.

Our Open Afternoons for current parents were a great success this week with pupils enjoying the opportunity given to explain and share their rich learning experience at St. Joseph’s. On Wednesday 27th March, Miss Brooks will be hosting a Big Writing Work-shop in the hall from 9:00 to 9:30. This is targeted at all parents who wish to learn useful tips and strategies on how to best support their child in their independent writing. Our pupils also found out more about our Lenten Almsgiving focus, welcoming a speaker from the Catholic Children’s Society who answered questions and explained the CCS’s 2019 Lenten Appeal ‘Shine your light.’

On Tuesday, Y3 and Y4 will be attending their Lenten Mass at Our Lady’s at 10:00 am. We are, as always, very grateful to parents who accompany the children on the walk to and from church.

The Auction is now only 1 day away and the Auction Shop (Nursery Classroom) is in full swing (Friday 8:30-4:30pm; Saturday 11am-4pm). It is not too late to donate your promises. Please take a look at the auction website either for inspiration or with a view to placing a bid.

Think about what you can contribute - this could be a customized Easter Bonnet; a Special Occasions Cake; a taxi service; a week in a holiday home. Be creative and contribute! The success of the auction depends on the input of everyone.

Jarvis is going home with Frederica today who recently had a haircut and donated her hair to The Little Princess Trust. The latter provide wigs for children with cancer. Frederica is also beautifully behaved and sets a wonderful example to all her peers.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Violet Class News

It has been a very exciting week in the Violet 1 and 2 classes! The children have written some fantastically persuasive letters about school uniform, break time, the school playground and the use of phones. They used strong, emotive language to make their points and showed confident presentation skills when reading out their letters - well done!

Our maths focus this week has been on reflection, symmetry and translation of shapes. This required implementing our knowledge of co-ordinates and we were very impressed with how the children handled this tricky learning!

We wrote letters from Judas' point of view in RE, conducted an exciting science experiment about water resistance and made some beautiful 'Come to Marvellous Maida Vale' posters in Topic/Art.

Have a great a weekend!
Mr McGee and Miss Burton

Wow! Weeeee! Violet 3 were on fire this week! In Maths we revised challenging word problems involving fractions, percentages and decimals. Our creative juices flowed in English as we wrote descriptive pieces to create a magical atmosphere based on our class book Skellig. We built circuits in Science to test if a material was a good conductor or insulator. Can you explain the difference between the two? In RE we analysed pictures of the raising of Lazarus to help us understand the story and symbolism. Enjoy a well deserved relaxing weekend Violet 3!

Blue Class News

St. Joseph's has been a hive of activity this week. Yesterday we had a special visitor from the Catholic Children's Society who discussed the importance of Alms giving. The children have really been showing their reflective sides in R.E. this week to compliment this.

In English we have looked at subordinate clauses and how they can be used to support independent sentences. The children then wrote some very creative sentences with imbedded clauses to describe their teachers!

In other lessons this week we have: divided by recalling number facts, solved some very frustrating maths mastery word problems, talked about how we can be closer to god during Lent and watched dancing skeletons!

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday night for the annual action.

Pink Class News

It has been an incredibly busy week. The children showed our visitor, on Tuesday, what it really means to be part of St Joseph’s School.

We focussed on division in our Maths lessons and the children understand that this is sharing equally. In English we continued to look at ‘Peace at Last’ and the children wrote their own versions of the story.

We hope to see you all on Saturday evening at the auction and wish you a peaceful weekend.

Head's Newsletter

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

Thank you all so much for the encouragement and kindness that you have shown me. I am sure that, with your support, together with that of all of our wonderful staff, and Mrs Wilson, the pupils in St. Joseph’s will thrive and our school continue to provide our children with an enriching learning environment.

Congratulations to our basketball athletes in Y5 and Y6 who performed excellently on Wednesday. Riccardo (Y6) has written a short report of this event: “When we entered the Moberly Sports Centre, I felt very excited and so did the team. We spent the first couple of hours doing drills and practicing for the real games. Once we were in competitive spirit, we began to play our first game and we drew one to one. The second game was also a draw at two-two. We finished all our games with a better result, nine-seven. The team came fifth out of fifteen other teams. We were proud of our good work and strong efforts.”

Please join us for our Open Afternoons (for existing parents only) which are taking place next week on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00 pm. The children thoroughly enjoy this opportunity to share their work with their parents.

On Tuesday, Y5 will be attending their Lenten Mass at Our Lady’s at 10:00 am. We are, as always, very grateful to parents who accompany the children on the walk to and from church.

On Wednesday 27th March, Miss Brooks will be hosting a Big Writing Work-shop in the hall from 9:00 to 9:30. This is a great opportunity to learn tips and strategies on how to best support your child in their independent writing.

The Auction is now only 1 week away and it is really important that you donate your promises. Please think about what you can contribute - this could be babysitting; flower arranging; hosting a dinner party; a taxi service; a week in a holiday home. Be creative and contribute! We rely on the auction for the quality of education and provision in our school. The success of the auction depends on the input of everyone.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Pink Class News

Congratulations to Pink Two for a fabulous assembly about the book ‘The Pencil’ which is by Allan Ahlberg.

It has been a busy week we have continued with multiplication and looking at arrays in Maths.

In English we have started to look at ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy. We have been thinking about using time connectives to order the story.

In R.E we have thought about the three practices that Catholics follow during the season of Lent. Please encourage your children to follow these.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend.

Violet Class News

It's been a terrific week in Violet 1 and 2 which started with a thoroughly enjoyable trip to forest schools! We made dens, had a camp fire with popcorn and hot chocolate and continued learning about Spring wildlife. In English we had a bumper week of learning as we covered modal verbs, sets of instructions and of course our exhilarating novel Stormbreaker. We finished off our angles learning in Maths and have had lots of fun starting studying the properties of 3D shapes. In science we looked at the work of Jane Goodall and wrote our Lent promises in RE. We are looking forward to our Lenten Mass next Tuesday at church.

Have a great weekend!
Miss Burton and Mr McGee

A busy week in Violet 3 as we continue to study and revise for our SATS. We conducted a mock SATS week and produced very pleasing results. Keep up the hard work, Violet 3!! On Tuesday, 7 children participated in a basketball competition, they worked together as a team and came fifth overall. The rest of the class went for a Lenten Mass at Our Lady's, we were very reflective and reverent. 15 lucky children thoroughly enjoyed themselves at to St George's on Thursday, they got to participate in a Science workshop and returned to school with some fantastic rockets. Next week, we are looking forward to sharing our work with you at the open afternoons on Wednesday and Thursday.

Blue Class News

Last Friday Year 4 had a great afternoon working together to construct their own skeletons. After a few false starts, they were most pleased with their results! This week we have discussed nutrients and how they are used in the body.

In English we continued our work on Kennings and crafted our pieces of writing so that we ended up with some fabulous riddles. In Grammar work we looked at expanded noun phrases and created some of our own.

In other lessons this week we have: divided 2-digit numbers by 10 and 100, looked at current affairs, worked on recalling the times tables facts at speed and learnt about God's way.

Wishing you all a safe and restful weekend.

Dear Pupils, Parents, Staff, and Governors,

Thank you all so much for all the kindness that you have shown me over the past couple of weeks. I am absolutely overwhelmed with your generosity of heart and spirit and feel very blessed that our family has known and will experience such a loving community as the one at St Joseph’s. I have been very privileged to lead a school that has such an abundance of love and good-will and I know that your thoughts and prayers will go with me.

I am sure that you will continue to support Mrs Viana, Mrs Wilson and all of the staff who do work so hard to provide the children with the very best educational experiences. I am confident that I leave the school in safe hands.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Pink Class News

Wow! What a busy week.

We had a fantastic time during Book Week. We studied a new book by our author Allan Ahlberg - ‘The Pencil’. It’s a great book and the children really enjoyed it.

Today it was our dress up day and Pink Two looked fabulous all dressed up as Burglar Bill and Burglar Betty. We even had a visit from the police - and like true burglars our children weren’t afraid!!!!

We focussed on multiplication as repeated addition for maths and shall continue with this next week extending our work to look at arrays.

Hope you have a fantastic weekend.
