Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

We are continuing our work with Forest Schools this term and many of the classes have visited Padding Rec since the start of term to take part in the various activities provided. This is a great experience for the children.

Children from years 3 and 4 took part in sports hall athletic today and performed brilliantly. 12 schools took part and St Joseph’s came 3rd – a great achievement. Many thanks to Coach and the parents who accompanied the children.

Alex Haswell, our school educational psychologist gave a very interesting talk to parents on the importance of sleep. The main points that he raised were:

  • 5 year olds need around 11 hours sleep a night,

  • 8 year olds around 10 hours a night,

  • and 11 year olds 9.5 hours.

  • Sleep is important for brain and cognitive development,

  • A relaxing routine is vital before bed,

  • Children need to be able to consolidate what they have learnt during the day at night time.

Our Parent Partnership workshop on homework was really useful and informative. Thank you to all of the parents who attended and gave their views on homework. Together, with the staff I will look at our homework policy and update it. The main points that came out of the meeting were:

  • The desire for more creativity,

  • Making homework meaningful,

  • More maths – including problem solving.

We will endeavour to achieve these requests!

We had a visit from the Foods Standards agency this week and I am delighted to inform you that we received a 5 star rating. This is great news and certainly no surprise. Congratulations to Ruth and her team.

On Thursday we had our first SJSA meeting of 2019. The auction was a topic for discussion and preparations are already underway. If you have any holiday homes, high quality items and experiences that you or your workplace could donate to the auction, please let us know. Also, if you have any ideas about what the school could donate, then please let me know. As always, the auction is a big job and many hands make light work. If you feel that you could help in any way, please speak to Mrs Boorer – Harvey (year 5) and Edie’s (year 2) mum.

Jarvis is going home with Elisa today who is always kind and helpful to everyone in school.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

This has certainly been a very busy term. The children did incredibly well performing in Nativity plays and carol concerts and it was lovely to see so many of you enjoying their talents. I delighted to say that our collections after the various performances managed to raise a staggering £1353.39. This money will go directly to St Joh’s Hospice in St John’s Wood. Thank you all so much for your generous support.

A huge thank you to our very talented cooks who provided over 300 Christmas dinners on Wednesday. The children and staff had a lovely feast and we all felt very well looked after. Ruth and her team worked so hard to make sure that everything was perfect and we all appreciate their hard work and preparation.

On Monday January 14th at 2:30 Alex Haswell will be in school to talk to parents about the importance of sleep. This is a continuation of his previous workshop on play. Alex is our school educational psychologist and is very experienced and knowledgeable in many aspects of child development and welfare. I would strongly recommend attending this workshop if you can.

I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 8th January at 9am fully refreshed and raring to go.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

Congratulations to all of the children in Key Stage 1 for their marvellous Nativity performances on Tuesday and Wednesday. The staff and children all worked incredibly hard and the final production was outstanding.

Year 6 sang beautifully and read fantastically at St Saviour’s on Thursday. They joined with other local schools and took part in a carol service. We were all very proud of them.

The children looked very bright and festive in their Christmas jumpers today. All money raised will be going to St John’s Hospice. We will be collecting for the hospice after the Early Years Nativity and the Key Stage 2 carol concert.

The KS2 Carol Concert will take place on Tuesday 18th December in the church. The first performance is at 2pm. If you would like to take your children from church, then you can however, all remaining children will be walked back to school after the concert to be collected from school at 3:30. Key stage 1 and the reception class will be joining us in church to watch the older children.

Parents are then asked to bring the children back to church for 5:30. Please note, the church will not be available until 5:30pm. Children can leave with parents once the concert has finished. All children must be in full school uniform including jumpers or cardigans.

Children will be enjoying Christmas dinner on Wednesday with parties in the afternoon. They are invited to wear their Christmas jumpers for the day.

We finish for Christmas on Friday 21st at 1:30. I hope that you all have a very peaceful and happy Christmas. I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 8th January.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

The school was transformed on Friday evening into a winter wonderland that was truly spectacular. The Winter Gala was a huge success and as well as having lots of fun, we managed to raise a very impressive £6800.00 This is not the final figure, I will update you as soon as we have it. With the money raised from the Winter Gale and the Read a Thon, we are buying new maths text books for lower key stage 2, 2 new interactive whiteboards for the classrooms, new laptops and a new sound system for the hall. Thank you to all of you who contributed through preparing the school, bring food, helping on the night and cleaning up. I would especially like to thank the brilliant DJ Mr Arash Namini and Kim Kirchner and Meron Abraham who coordinated the event.

In the run up to Christmas the children are taking part in a number of local community events. The year 3 classes are visiting our neighbours in Leonora House to sing carols and share some Christmas cheer. Thank you to Mrs Cassanova for organising this. The children in year 6, as well as joining Westminster Catholic schools for the carol service in Westminster Cathedral, will be joining other local schools at St Saviour’s Church for an afternoon of ‘Shared Voices’. I think it is really important for the children to engage in the community that they live in and think about others over the Christmas period.

Thank you to everybody who supported our poppy appeal. We raised £189.43 which all goes to helping and supporting veterans.

All are welcome at the Christmas Festival at Our Lady’s Church this Saturday!

  • Tombola

  • Silent Auction

  • Raffle

  • Cake Stall

  • Key Game

This week Jarvis is going home with James in Pink 2as they are always very kind and considerate to everyone in school.

You may remember that at the parent teacher consultations you were asked to complete a survey. We have compiled the results and are very happy with the responses that you gave.

112 parents completed the survey and of those:

  • 98% agree that their child is happy at St. Joseph’s;

  • 100% believe that their child feels safe;

  • 96% agree that their child is well looked after;

  • 97% believe that the school ensure their child is well behaved;

  • 91% agree that the school is well led and well managed.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

I am very much looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow evening at the winter gala. This year we have a 70’s disco theme and there will be karaoke and photo booths as well as food and bar. If you haven’t already got your ticket, you can come along and pay on the door.

I was delighted at the weekend to see that St Joseph’s is in the top 200 schools in the country according to the Sunday Times. This places us in the top 1% of state primary schools which is an incredible achievement. I asked the children why they thought St Joseph’s was so special and they came back with some lovely responses:

  • ‘Everyone is kind and helpful’.

  • ‘We all support each other’.

  • ‘We are one family’

Long may it continue!

Please remember that we are a nut free school and therefore the children cannot bring in cereal bar snacks. The only snack that children are allowed to eat in school is fruit.

As the Christmas holiday approach, please remember that we do not break up from school until 21st December. Please do not book holidays before that date. Many thanks.

This week Jarvis is going home with Stella D in violet 2 who is always kind and considerate to everyone in school. What a good role model.

I am sure many of you are aware of the new GDPR regulations that came into effect in May. These new laws have been put in place in order to protect identity and personal data. Please be mindful when using any whatsApp groups that may be associated with school that information shared on these can be public and you may be held to account for information disclosed or opinions expressed if presented as factual.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

It has been my huge pleasure this week to go to the classrooms and see the children learning maths. There is such a wealth of knowledge from the children and the enjoyment and engagement that I have witnessed has been astounding. It is marvellous to see the creativity and effort that the children put into the lessons to make maths so engaging and relevant.

We are all very much looking forward to the Winter Gala which this year has a 70’s disco theme. Please remember to buy your tickets and book a babysitter. This promises to be a great night.

Congratulations to all of our Read a Thon winners. Caroline in reception and Molly in year 5 both won electronic readers. Thank you to all the children who read lots of books and gained lots of sponsorship for the school.

Once again, can I please ask all parents not to park on the zig zag lines both before and after school. This is for the safety of all children and parking on the lines causes a hazard. This is particularly important at the moment when we have roads works. Please consider others when parking.

This week Jarvis is going home with Alessandra in pink 2 who has been very kind and considerate to everyone in school this week. Mrs Robinson is delighted with the progress that she has made.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Head's Newsletter

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

On Wednesday we had an open morning for parents wishing to join St Joseph’s for September 2019. It was very well attended and the parents were very impressed with what they saw and with the children that they met. One of the messages that we gave was that we no longer have a catchment area and so if you have friends who live further afield, then please let them know that they can apply. This is even more relevant for children who may have moved into the area and who are looking for a place in key stage 2.

The Read a Thon has been a huge success yet again. Thank you to everyone who worked hard in the organisation, the collection and big thanks to the children who read, read and then read some more. We raised approximately £14,000 but will have the final figure next week when all monies have been collected and counted. Next week in assembly we will be making the prize draw and 2 lucky winners will receive a kindle.

Preparations for the Winter Gala are well under way and it promises to be a great night-especially if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Disco Diva or Disco Dave. Please remember to buy a ticket either on line or at the gate. This is a great way to support the school and get involved.

It was fantastic to see so many parents coming to school to look at the children’s books. The children have done some truly brilliant work so far this year and they are rightly very proud and love having the opportunity to show off.

Many thanks to our wonderful year 6 children who led in the school in a very moving and respectful Remembrance Day service this morning. All of the children were very dignified and mature.

Congratulations to Marine in blue 3 who has shown real kindness this week to other children in her class. She is always considering other children and I think she will look after Jarvis exceptionally well.

Now that the nights are drawing in and it is getting remarkably colder, we are collecting unwanted winter coats for homeless people. If you have any coats at home that you no longer need, please bring them into school and place them in the bag outside the main office.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

Today marks the end of Read a Thon. Thank you for all your support and contributions. When all of the sponsor money comes in, we will of course let you know the final figures and what we intend to do with the money.

The children behaved impeccably on Thursday when we joined the parish of our Lady’s for All Saints Day mass. Many thanks to Fr Jeff for leading this special celebration.

Congratulations to our Netball team who braved the rain on Thursday to win their group round. They will be playing in the finals next week where we are hoping for a win.

Three children in Blue 2 had a lovely surprise this week when they received a letter from the Duchess of Cambridge. Alice, Romina and Zac made a wooden badge for Prince Lois whilst they were visiting forest schools. The next day, when the Duchess arrived at Paddington Rec, she was presented with the badge. The letter that the children received thanked them for their thoughtfulness and kindness.

Thank you to those parents who attended the meeting regarding school finances on Tuesday. We are very fortunate at St Joseph’s that our parental body is so generous both in terms of finances and time commitment. Please also have a look at this letter which has details of how you set up a monthly donation. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support and generosity.

Now that the nights are drawing in and it is getting remarkably colder, we are collecting unwanted winter coats for homeless people. If you have any coats at home that you no longer need, please bring them into school and place them in the box in the entrance area outside the main office.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.
