Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

Thank you all so much for the encouragement and kindness that you have shown me. I am sure that, with your support, together with that of all of our wonderful staff, and Mrs Wilson, the pupils in St. Joseph’s will thrive and our school continue to provide our children with an enriching learning environment.

Congratulations to our basketball athletes in Y5 and Y6 who performed excellently on Wednesday. Riccardo (Y6) has written a short report of this event: “When we entered the Moberly Sports Centre, I felt very excited and so did the team. We spent the first couple of hours doing drills and practicing for the real games. Once we were in competitive spirit, we began to play our first game and we drew one to one. The second game was also a draw at two-two. We finished all our games with a better result, nine-seven. The team came fifth out of fifteen other teams. We were proud of our good work and strong efforts.”

Please join us for our Open Afternoons (for existing parents only) which are taking place next week on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00 pm. The children thoroughly enjoy this opportunity to share their work with their parents.

On Tuesday, Y5 will be attending their Lenten Mass at Our Lady’s at 10:00 am. We are, as always, very grateful to parents who accompany the children on the walk to and from church.

On Wednesday 27th March, Miss Brooks will be hosting a Big Writing Work-shop in the hall from 9:00 to 9:30. This is a great opportunity to learn tips and strategies on how to best support your child in their independent writing.

The Auction is now only 1 week away and it is really important that you donate your promises. Please think about what you can contribute - this could be babysitting; flower arranging; hosting a dinner party; a taxi service; a week in a holiday home. Be creative and contribute! We rely on the auction for the quality of education and provision in our school. The success of the auction depends on the input of everyone.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parents, Staff, and Governors,

Thank you all so much for all the kindness that you have shown me over the past couple of weeks. I am absolutely overwhelmed with your generosity of heart and spirit and feel very blessed that our family has known and will experience such a loving community as the one at St Joseph’s. I have been very privileged to lead a school that has such an abundance of love and good-will and I know that your thoughts and prayers will go with me.

I am sure that you will continue to support Mrs Viana, Mrs Wilson and all of the staff who do work so hard to provide the children with the very best educational experiences. I am confident that I leave the school in safe hands.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

The new half term has started with a real buzz thanks to a brilliant art week organised by Mrs Robinson. All of the children from years 1-6 have enjoyed a visit to the Tate this week and they have all come back to school with lots of ideas and creative energy. Everybody has also enjoyed a plate painting workshop and it has been great to see the children enjoying art and experiencing the pleasure of making something beautiful.

Congratulations to our swimmers in key stage 2 who performed marvellously in the swimming gala on Thursday. Out of 16 schools we came 4th. The children had a great day and were a credit to the school.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, marking the start of lent and the children in Key Stage 2 will be attending mass at Our lady’s at 10am. We are always grateful to parents who accompany the children on the walk to and from church.

The Auction is now only a few weeks away and it is really important that you donate your promises. Please think about what you can contribute - this could be babysitting; hosting a dinner party; a taxi service; a week in a holiday home. Be creative and contribute! The success of the auction depends on the input of everyone. Enter your promises here.

Please remember to join us on Monday in the hall from 8:30am to welcome Mrs Wilson to St Joseph’s. This will be an opportunity to have a coffee and say hello.

Many of you may be aware of proposals to move Victoria Coach station from its current location to Royal Oak. Royal Oak is just south of Harrow Road and 0.8 miles from the school.

14 million travellers use Victoria coach station each year and the negative impact on our local area and the school children and their families in terms of big increases in pollution, crime, noise and congestion is very significant.

I have included links to the Westminster Labour and Conservative pages who are both petitioning against these proposals.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Head's Newsletter

As we come to half term and the half way point of the year, it is an ideal time for reflection. The first half of this year has been very busy and full and during the course of this week I have had the chance to meet with all of the teachers to discuss the progress that the children have made so far. I have to say that I am so proud of all of the children who are all working so hard and are all making such fabulous progress. The year 5 assembly on Thursday was a good example of the children being engaged, enthused and creative learners. They did a marvellous job of combining E safety with the Tudors – a rare feat!

It has, of course, been E safety week in school and years 1-6 all had workshops with our E safety consultant friend, Belinda. Belinda was very impressed with the knowledge that the children showed and how sensible they are. As I am sure you know, it is really important to talk to your children about what they are doing on line, who they are talking to and how much screen time they have.

Jarvis is going home with Maisie today who is very gentle, kind and caring and I know she will look after Jarvis very well over half term.

Congratulations to Coach Grant and his Fiancée Jane who are getting married on Wednesday. We wish them all the best.

I hope that you all have a very restful and peaceful half term and I look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 25th February.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

We had another sport-filled week with our Year 5 and Year 6 girls reaching the semi-finals, showing great determination and sportsmanship in a nail-biting 1-0 defeat. They should be very proud of their efforts and were indeed a sterling example of fair play and team collaboration. Our sporting endeavours are also continuing next week with Swimming Gala trials and we are sure that all those pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 will try their very best.

The importance of outdoor learning and our enriched curriculum was also celebrated this week with Blue 3’s visit to Forest Schools in Paddington Recreation Ground, Y6’s trip to the Royal Albert Hall and Reception’s trip to the London Transport Museum. The children returned to school refreshed and engaged, ready to write about or speak about their learning experiences. These enriching opportunities are continuing next week not only with our focus on E-Safety and corresponding workshops for our pupils on Tuesday 12th February but also in Y5’s Tudor Tower of London workshop on Monday 11th February.

Nursery and Reception will be holding Maths Workshops for Parents on Wednesday 13th February and Thursday the 14th of February, respectively, from 9:00. These are perfect opportunities for parents to glean ideas, tips or strategies that they can share with their children to support them in their learning journey.

With the half-term holiday fast approaching, please set aside some time to think about your contribution to the school auction, the school’s most significant fund-raising event. Whether you donate an item or are able to give some time to help in the preparations, all offers are warmly welcomed. Donations can be made on the auction site. If you have any questions please email the auction team.

Jarvis is going home with Dawud today who demonstrates wonderful generosity of spirit to his peers and is always caring, kind and considerate to everyone in school.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

The week began with fantastic news that our year 5 and 6 football team absolutely smashed it by beating 20 other teams from across Westminster in 6 matches. They finally won the group by beating St Mary of the Angels on penalties and are now through to the next round. The team were all brilliant examples of fairness and we are all very proud of them.

Over the coming weeks, please take some time to think about what you could do for the school auction. Whether you donate an item or are able to give some time to help in the preparations, all offers are warmly welcomed.

There are lots of brilliant resources on the LGFL website to help keep children safe online. There are guides and advice about how to talk to children about e safety. It is really worth having a look.

It is always lovely to receive feedback about St Joseph’s and here is what one parent who is applying to the school wrote:

The laughter and happiness we see every time we pass the school is hard not to notice. This school has the religious values that are very close to our hearts. As well as being academically strong it nurtures children enough for them to blossom and achieve their potential best. The community is very strong and one that we would be proud to be a part of and contribute our time and effort.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

I would like to say thanks you this week to the children who have been very helpful and sensible. We have been hit by a flu-like virus and many of the staff have had to take time off. The children have continued to work hard and be helpful to the cover teachers that have taken classes. All of the cover teachers have commented on what lovely, polite and clever children we have!

I was so proud this week to see our Reception class going out and walking to Pizza Express. Mr Bowles and the staff were very pleased with the behaviour of the children who were all very sensible and showed their manners. The children had a great time and came back to school with their own pizzas - made by their own hands!

Children from years 5 and 6 took part in sports hall athletics at The Moberly Sports Centre and performed brilliantly. 13 schools took part and St Joseph’s came 4th – a great achievement. Many thanks to Coach and the parents who accompanied the children.

School trips and outings are extremely important and enhance and enrich our curriculum and provide an essential role in the education of the children. I know that parents come on as many trips are they are able, however, we do rely on your support to make trips work. We are relying more and more on parents to help with school trips, so thank you to all of you who do help and please volunteer through your CVCs if you are able to help.

Term dates for the next two years are now on the website (up to 2020-2021). Please make sure when you are booking holidays and trips abroad that school terms are taken into account. Parents are not authorised to take holidays in term time. Permission from the head teacher must be sought for special circumstances if a child is to miss school.

Jarvis is going home with Arsenii today who has made really excellent progress since joining St Joseph’s in September and is proving to be a wonderful member of the school community.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Head's Newsletter

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

We are continuing our work with Forest Schools this term and many of the classes have visited Padding Rec since the start of term to take part in the various activities provided. This is a great experience for the children.

Children from years 3 and 4 took part in sports hall athletic today and performed brilliantly. 12 schools took part and St Joseph’s came 3rd – a great achievement. Many thanks to Coach and the parents who accompanied the children.

Alex Haswell, our school educational psychologist gave a very interesting talk to parents on the importance of sleep. The main points that he raised were:

  • 5 year olds need around 11 hours sleep a night,

  • 8 year olds around 10 hours a night,

  • and 11 year olds 9.5 hours.

  • Sleep is important for brain and cognitive development,

  • A relaxing routine is vital before bed,

  • Children need to be able to consolidate what they have learnt during the day at night time.

Our Parent Partnership workshop on homework was really useful and informative. Thank you to all of the parents who attended and gave their views on homework. Together, with the staff I will look at our homework policy and update it. The main points that came out of the meeting were:

  • The desire for more creativity,

  • Making homework meaningful,

  • More maths – including problem solving.

We will endeavour to achieve these requests!

We had a visit from the Foods Standards agency this week and I am delighted to inform you that we received a 5 star rating. This is great news and certainly no surprise. Congratulations to Ruth and her team.

On Thursday we had our first SJSA meeting of 2019. The auction was a topic for discussion and preparations are already underway. If you have any holiday homes, high quality items and experiences that you or your workplace could donate to the auction, please let us know. Also, if you have any ideas about what the school could donate, then please let me know. As always, the auction is a big job and many hands make light work. If you feel that you could help in any way, please speak to Mrs Boorer – Harvey (year 5) and Edie’s (year 2) mum.

Jarvis is going home with Elisa today who is always kind and helpful to everyone in school.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Dear Pupils, Parents, Staff, and Governors,

Many I wish you all a very happy new year. It was lovely to see the children on Tuesday morning and the term has got off to a great start with everybody being very kind, helpful and considerate of each other.

On Monday January 14th at 2:30 Alex Haswell will be in school to talk to parents about the importance of sleep. This is a continuation of his previous workshop on play. Alex is our school educational psychologist and is very experienced and knowledgeable in many aspects of child development and welfare. I would strongly recommend attending this workshop if you can.

On Wednesday 16th January at 9am we will holding a Parent Partnership workshop on homework in the hall. I would welcome your comments and suggestions about how we can improve homework provision for all of the children.

On Thursday 17th January at 9:30am we will be having our first school association meeting of 2019. Everybody is invited to join us for school association meetings and this is a great opportunity to get involved in school fund raising.

Jarvis is going home with Prince today who is always kind and helpful to everyone in school.

Head's Newsletter

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

This has certainly been a very busy term. The children did incredibly well performing in Nativity plays and carol concerts and it was lovely to see so many of you enjoying their talents. I delighted to say that our collections after the various performances managed to raise a staggering £1353.39. This money will go directly to St Joh’s Hospice in St John’s Wood. Thank you all so much for your generous support.

A huge thank you to our very talented cooks who provided over 300 Christmas dinners on Wednesday. The children and staff had a lovely feast and we all felt very well looked after. Ruth and her team worked so hard to make sure that everything was perfect and we all appreciate their hard work and preparation.

I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 8th January at 9am fully refreshed and raring to go.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Mrs K Husain
