Head's Newsletter

Dear Pupils, Parent, Staff, and Governors,

Thank you to the many parents who helped walk the children up and down from church on Wednesday for All Saints Day.  This is a lovely feast and the children sang ‘When the Saints go Marching in’ with real gusto.  They were all beautifully behaved and were a credit to the school.

Once again this year, we will be joining with Chesterton’s to provide coats for people in London who may not have a warm winter coat.  If you have any old coats that are still in good condition, you can bring them to school from Monday where we will have a collection point.

On Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome Liz Pichon - celebrated author and illustrator of the Tom Gates children's book series - to our school. The Pink, Blue and Violet classes were fascinated to learn about what inspired Liz to become an author, how her hero - Tom Gates - came to life and also how Liz uses her illustrations to add excitement, colour and movement to her books. In fact, by the end of the work-shop, we all became budding authors and illustrators, creating our own Tom Gates illustrations. Please note, those of you who missed the opportunity to buy books can still do so because Liz left us signed book plates together with a varied selection of her works at very reasonable prices.

The Read-a-Thon came to an end today with a flourish when the children came to school dressed as their favourite book character. There is still time to sponsor your child and help to raise more money.

As part of The Poetry Society's annual Look North More Often project, Coral Rumble - accomplished poet and author - visited Y6 on Friday the 3rd November for a Whole Day Poetry Work-shop. This multi-school project culminates in a piece of work that incorporates the pupils’ poetry, and is put together by children’s writer A. F. Harrold. Primary school pupils will also be given the opportunity to perform poetry in Trafalgar Square for the turning on of the lights in December.

Packed Lunches
As a healthy school, we do encourage children who are on packed lunch to bring a healthy packed lunch to school.  Children should not bring sweets, chocolate, lollipops, crisps or fizzy drinks as part of their lunch. From Monday we will be checking the lunches of children to make sure that they are eating an appropriate lunch.

Preparations are under way for the Winter Gala which will take place on 25th November this year.  We will be discussing the organisation of this event in the St Joseph’s School Association meeting on Tuesday 7th November at 6:30. All are welcome to join us.

On Wednesday 8th November at 9 a.m., Nursery parents are invited to a free reading for pleasure workshop run by the Family Learning Team from Westminster Adult Education Service and Westminster Library service. The workshop consists of a story time session and a reading for pleasure workshop giving you tips on how to make stories and books fun at home.

Class “Come and See” for all current parents will take place on Wednesday 8th November at 2:30 and Thursday 9th November at 2:30.  Parents are invited to come and see the children’s books and their classrooms. This is a lovely opportunity for the children to talk to you about their work and show you what they have been doing in class. Parent can come on either day.

Open evenings for prospective parents with children looking to join nursery or reception classes in September 2018 will be held on Wednesday 8th November at 6pm and Monday 13th November at 6pm.  There will be a talk from the Headteacher and a short tour of the school.

Parent workshop by the school’s Educational Psychologist, Alexander Haswell: The Importance of Play and Sleep in Child Development
Tuesday November 7th at 9:15am

In this one hour workshop we will discuss the importance of play and sleep in child development. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination and is essential to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. We will also look at the importance of sleep, as evidence shows that night time sleep is just as important as healthy eating and exercise for children to develop.
This will be a practical workshop, offering all parents who attend meaningful strategies and ideas to support their children around these crucial areas. There will be lots of room for questions during the workshop and parents will be invited back later in the academic year to meet again with the educational psychologist, to discuss progress and ask questions / share observations and ideas.

Hi5 Netball Competition
Seven children from Years 5 and 6 did themselves proud, in what was a highly charged netball competition yesterday. Fifteen Westminster schools took part in the competition, and St. Joseph’s achieved a very respectable 3rd. Well done to Gabriella, Tommy, Julius, Sybil, Lulu, Elena and Ingrid who all made valuable contributions in both defensive and attacking play. It was an achievement made all the more sweet with an ice cream to celebrate a great day! Finally, a big thank you to the parents who came to cheer on the team.

The UCM Members of the Church of Our Lady are holding a social night on Saturday 11th November - 8 til Late!! There will be music, bar, buffet and a cash prize raffle. It would be wonderful to see you there and join us to celebrate the kick start to Christmas. £5 entry on the door and raffle tickets are on sale now at the church!

May God bless you and family and keep you safe.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs K Husain
Head teacher
