Yesterday a few people from Years 5 and 6 went to Paddington Rec to compete in a football tournament. When we arrived there were 19 schools already there and we were the 20th school. We warmed up and then it was match time. Disaster struck when we realised that the majority of the team had not brought any shin pads – would we be allowed to participate? Luckily they did not check, so with a sigh of relief we entered our first game. We won our group matches 6-0, 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0. We were on top form and enjoying our ever growing successes.
With our spirits high we entered the quarter finals against St. Stephen’s. It was the toughest match we had had so far and it ended with a draw. The moment we all dreaded was upon us, penalties! Xavier, Edgar and I were to take them with Andre as our keeper. We were triumphant and scored three spectacular penalties. Fortune was on our side as they missed one of their penalties.
The semi-final was upon us. The opposition scored an early goal – we gathered up our team spirit and soldiered on. Johnny scored the equalizer and for the second time in the tournament we were to face a penalty shootout. Once again we were to win the penalty shootout, this time with Xavier in goal. We had reached the finals!
With nerves pumping through our bodies we faced our most challenging competitors. Again our skill and talent shone through during yet another penalty shootout. We won with an amazing save from Xavier!
We would like to thank Coach Grant for all his time and support especially as he came to the tournament while he was very unwell.
